Why do people use food banks?
Our evidence found that often it’s because problems with their benefits – such as delays in payments or sanctions – mean they don’t have the money to feed themselves and their families.
A few adjustments to our safety net would make sure no one was forced to rely on food banks to put food on the table.
But this isn’t a story the government wants to hear. The Department of Work and Pensions have said our research ‘can’t prove anything’. We disagree: the research is indicative of a national problem, one which is supported by many organisations working with people struggling to put food on the table.
Food banks are doing their bit to help people in desperate need, but no one should be left destitute. Make sure the government does its bit by asking your MP to write to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions calling on him to implement the recommendations of this report.
